re: breathing and tone support.

The all time authority on the subject is Arnold Jacobs, longtime tubist with the Chicago Symphony.  His principles have been condensed by some of his students into a program called Breathing Gym, which I recommend without hesitation.  Just do a Google search, and several examples of exercises are available on YouTube.

We have used this from the get-go with the school band I am working with, and the results have been tremendous.  It's so much easier to tune when you actually have support and develop a real pitch center.

Hi to all.  I've been off the bench for awhile, but I'm starting to get rolling again.  Lots of additional activity in the real world has pulled me away, but it's good to catch back up with things.

Thanks for the review of the tumbler.  I have a Harbor Freight tumbler that is basically a Hornady M-2.  I'm looking for something quieter since my wife is working at home now.

Top tip on those hinge tubes - stuff pipe cleaners in them and just clip them with dikes, leaving a bit out on each end.  Bend the ends at acute angles and they'll stay where you put them.  Saves hacking the residue out.  Sometimes the spring screws stay in and sometimes they don't.  I've spent anxious moments with a magnet on a stick looking for rogue screws.  I usually put them in with a little purple Loctite now before running them thru the tumbler.  It's a great tool.

I've been scarce around here, but this was right in my wheelhouse.  You guys have pretty much nailed it for the model (yes, 26) - outstanding feedback from the always reliable @silversorcerer.

First time I've seen a genuine Selmer bass without the low Eb, so we all learn something new every day.  It's a great old horn, and likely sounds wonderful in the right hands.  If you need help sorting it out, PM me.  I'll be happy to play it and let you know what I think if you're in my area at all (metro Jacksonville).

The Soloist is clearly the best of the Signets and is a favorite of mine.  I have heard that these were assembled in the US from Selmer Paris parts, especially the keywork, but cannot confirm with any citations.  I grab these when I find them and move them along after an overhaul.

From your pictures, you appear to have an LL from the very late 60's or early 70's.  The size of the LEBLANC on the logo would put it right about that era.

Those are excellent clarinets.

Before you start working on the tone holes, please take the time to check your pad heights. 

Other than the holes you cover with your own fingers, the pitches of all notes can be affected by their associated pad heights - which of course have a different effect on the different twelfths that they influence in their position on the tube with the opening of the register key. 

It doesn't just affect stuffiness and tone quality, but pitch as well.

With that caveat, have yourself a field day and keep us informed.

I am also pleased with this very functional thumbrest accessory.  This device does more to help raise that right wrist into the correct position for less fatigue and better facility than any other I have tried. 

The taper encourages the thumb to comfortably hold the clarinet up, leaving the wrist position and the right hand's fingers up into the right position, and letting them stay there. 

It is the functional equivalent of a pianist holding those wrists up to allow better key technique.

I just nabbed myself a 424N from 1941.  B303276L

I spent about fifteen minutes adjusting the bridge, and could see that the pads and corks looked good.  Very good actually, for the corks throughout - looked a fairly fresh job before it went into the closet.  Once I got things lined up and trued up so I had a good 1&1 Eb/Bb, this plays very nicely indeed. 

Mine has the C.G.Conn Elkhart oval stamp as a logo, but otherwise looks much like what you show above, the tenon fittings are similar while the bridge is not spread on the lower joint.  In '41, I suspect these were made in Elkhart.  Here's the bell. Those were the "Kell keys" usually found on the 2-20 B&H models that were current when I was a student long long ago - they date to the 50's and 60's.  A good friend in my HS band had one, and I pick them up, fix them, and move them along even now.  They are well-made big bore horns. 

Apparently their incorporation is through the influence of Reginald Kell, and you see them on all those many 2-20s that are out there.

I was a little hesitant about going forward with a two tone on a $800 instrument, but I think it turned out quite well
Somehow the Selmer logos are always the easiest and best looking ones, at least in my experience.  These look lovely. 

I'm on hiatus right now until I reconfigure/clean/repaint my shop (should take a couple of weeks) and I have a Monopole that I want to tackle when I get back in gear.  Looking forward to that one.  I'll post it to this thread when I'm done.

The reports from various players who have tried these is that there is nothing spectacular about the way these play or sound.
These were made of laminated cocobolo plywood cut into billets for clarinets.  The wood looks like the laminated wood for WW2 propellers, hence the propeller-wood Conn name for these.

There is nothing at all spectacular about these clarinets except that they are really, really pretty when you clean them up right.  Note how beautifully this wood 'grain' transitions from the body to the bell and barrel.  This is one padded out in lovely white roo pads and tweaked as much as I can and it's still bog average at best as a player.  Sure does look good.
