I said the "format" was far superior. The "other" forum is laughably ancient, clunky and featureless. It would be great to get those folks to migrate over here. But I can't control that any more than I could get people to move from VHS to Betamax back in the day. It has to happen organically.

I've only ever owned one clarinet, a 1989 Vito 7214 which was given to me by a friend in 1989. I do have quite a few saxophones though. I've had far more opportunities on sax over the years than clarinet. If I played more, I suppose I'd have a reason to upgrade. Vito still plays well enough. Can't complain.

I love small, light, zippered cases too. But the OP wants latches. We shouldn't impose our personal preferences. A more appropriate suggestion would be something like this:

I don't see any latches on the Protec.

For the sake of more participation, I'd never heard of clarinetfest before. I'd love to go if there were one near me someday. But it would be a long and expensive trip to CO for me.

As others have said, while the format of this forum is far superior to others, it gets very little traffic. I suppose I'm part of the reason. So I'll endeavor to post more, hopefully things of interest to others.

If you like 20's / 30's music (more jazz orientated), check out the link!

Hi lydian. Welcome to the forum.  :)

You hit the ground running with your first post!

Dave may have been traumatized by his middle school band director, but he's not "100%" wrong. Single lip vs. Double lip embouchure is simply a choice.  It is not for me to say which one is better than the other. I prefer double lip as it feels more relaxed and open.
Thanks. I guess it was bad form to come out swinging on my first post. But the reality is "almost never" rather than "almost always".

As a new clarinet player after 50 years on sax, I was perusing this forum, and the jazz sax double lip claim got me a little worked up. Other than that, loving the forum so far and slowly adapting to clarinet, which I have to play a lot in the 20s/30s dance band I joined recently. I'm getting by, but still have a lot to learn.

Looking forward to more discussion. I'll try to dial it back some in the future.

From looking at videos of traditional jazz saxophonists, they almost always have the double lip. Clarinet seems to be half and half.

When I was a young tyke in middle school, the band director considered double lipping a crime, so I've always had that mentality.
This is 100% wrong. Double lip is extremely rare in jazz saxophone. Of the hundreds of famous players I'm familiar with, I can count on one hand the ones who played double lip at some point, usually due to physical problems that left them no other choice. Regardless of what you think you're seeing, most have their teeth firmly planted on top of the mouthpiece because that's what works best.

I would expect the proportion of double lip in the jazz clarinet to be higher than in sax simply because it's a little more mainstream, but still fairly rare.

I would recommend double lip only to the few players who may experience serious discomfort in spite of using patches.
