All about Clarinets / What extra key is this?
« on: December 08, 2019, 08:06:18 AM »
I spotted this picture on Instagram. Is this a boehm clarinet or a different system with that low (Eb) key?

I really could do with a good method book, but it needs to be spiral bound so it can sit on my music stand.

Well this is new. I just come here from the link on my blog and I see a whole host of new fora! I swear they weren't there the other day, yet some of the posts date back to 2016!
Nice to see the forum expanding .

I squeak a little but I just need to keep my embouchure tight! I have a silly looking exercise to help with that...

All about Clarinets / Getting the second register
« on: August 17, 2019, 11:52:20 AM »
I can just about go into the second octave but only so far up. Around about the C hole it starts to crack and further up, nothing, no matter how hard I blow or how I change my embouchure. I'm probably not really ready for that range yet, but what exactly are you supposed to to get that high?

All about Clarinets / Back to basics with Galper
« on: May 04, 2019, 11:57:44 AM »
I got a copy of the Galper Clarinet method and I need to get on with it. Sure I can play fun tunes  but reading from sheet is a different beast. Also, I've neglected my clarinet in favour of other instruments and  my fingers have forgotten what notes on the sheet go with what keys, so I need this simple practice!

All about Clarinets / Difference between sax and clarinet playing
« on: January 28, 2019, 04:09:34 PM »
One thing that has struck me. When playing clarinet you hold the instrument in such a way that the mpc is almost vertical to the mouth, so you are blowing across the reed rather than through it.  I was constantly told to lower my clarinet, a practice I have now adopted and my playing has improved-it makes perfect sense now. But then I see sax players. Similar instrument but look at the mpc angle. Its placed in the mouth the way a recorder is-almost straight in. And yet, despite it being a reed instrument, the player gets clear and strong sound. Also, do sax players use double lip embouchure?

I've always loved this piece and I said if I get a clarinet I'd learn to play sheet music, just working out the notes and playing by ear. I'm also working on tightening up my embouchure and keeping my head up.
The second part of the song goes into the next register. I ain't ready for that yet 😋

All about Clarinets / Playing in the clarion range
« on: January 13, 2019, 04:13:18 PM »
I was playing Ode to Joy earlier, normal chalumeau range stuff, and I wondered how far I could get in the clarion range. I quite surprised myself how easy it was compared to last year!
I'd been watching some beginner tutorial videos to tighten up my embouchure and such and it helped me see how I've inproved!

All about Clarinets / Understanding mouthpieces

My mp is a Yamaha 4C and I currently use Rico Royal 2.5s, but looking online about mp choice I come across a lot of info. Different facings, lays, tip openings and French style/American style mouthpiece-its a minefield!
Is there an easy summary of all this different info?

All about Clarinets / Best online source of clarinet accessories
« on: December 17, 2018, 08:09:45 AM »
I had a little money for my birthday and I hope to spend it on stuff for my clarinet, namely a neck strap and instrument stand. Aside from Amazon where is the best online source for such items? I'd also like to try a synthetic reed, was thinking of a Legere with European cut. Neither of us drive so really I'm limited to online only.
