All about Clarinets / Trying out some different reeds today
« on: June 29, 2018, 08:37:49 AM »
My usual reeds are Ricos, the latest ones being 2.5s. But it was suggested I try Vandorens, in strength 2, which is equivalent to Rico 2.5s and so I got a pack of 3.
First impressions are they are louder and more prone to squeak or growl. I find I have to be careful how much Mp I put in my mouth, and embouchure angle is critical. But they do sound more clarinet-like to me once you get the hang of them. Should new reeds be broken in before they are at their best? (I've only tried one from the pack so far).
And what reeds do you all use? My mp is a Yamaha 4C.

All about Clarinets / Summertime...

I feel like I'm getting somewhere, especially since discovering the benefit of using the mirror in the bathroom  to check embouchure. And of course the acoustic in there is fantastic!

Anyone else use cigarette papers as pad dryers?
I've yet to try drying my pads , never knew I needed to until recently.

All about Clarinets / I've found a very important accessory...

.to help my embouchure
A mirror!
I read in my book that I should check my embouchure in a mirror but I always thought I'd feel silly doing that so I ignored it. But I've been getting fed up of the mouthpiece moving about in my mouth, and I keep puffing my cheeks. I wanted to correct that, so I played in the bathroom in front of the shaving mirror. What a difference!
Also the acoustic in there is fantastic. Natural reverb and the sound is boosted!

All about Clarinets / Simple sore thumb fix
« on: June 20, 2018, 04:00:56 AM »
My clarinet has a rubber thumb rest which works ok, but I find it gets sore where it presses against the instrument body itself. The fix was simple. I had some old gloves and I simply cut the thumb off, snipped the end off so its like a sleeve, voilą.

All about Clarinets / La Vie en Rose-Edith Piaf

I heard someone playing this on trumpet and I thought I'd give it a go on my clarinet. I had to transpose a little and I'm not 100% familiar with the ending so I kinda made that part up.

All about Clarinets / Is my Bb in tune?
« on: April 12, 2018, 12:36:18 PM »
Is my Bb clarinet out of tune? All holes open should be a G right? I get an E. Lowest note should be an E? I get a D
I do have two barrels but I don't think it would make that much of a difference.

All about Clarinets / A bit soon?
« on: November 29, 2017, 07:15:13 AM »
But well, practice is practice!
By the way I checked tuning against my ukulele, the C string corresponds with the C key on the clarinet.
I then tried switching to the slightly longer barrel-no difference!

All about Clarinets / A query about reeds
« on: November 24, 2017, 03:11:36 AM »
Ok so this is a query about reeds. I just found this video and it got me thinking.
I have a pack of 3 Rico Royal 2s and I'm still just using the first one I opened. I never thought of trying others in the pack, a reed is a reed. And this reed seems to last forever! No mold, no splits. How long are they supposed to last?

All about Clarinets / Sore thumb
« on: November 22, 2017, 12:03:09 PM »
The only trouble with clarinet is it kills my thumb! Not necessarily on the top, the rubber thumb protector helps there, it's more where the thumb holds the body of the instrument. Not sure if it's the angle I'm holding my thumb or just pressure on the body. Might have to try a sponge on the body itself

All about Clarinets / Reeds and mouthpieces
« on: November 22, 2017, 03:18:38 AM »
I have a good MP for my plastic clarinet and decent reeds (Rico Royals, 2.5) but I still squeak an awful lot. A  lot is possibly due to my untrained embouchure but I read somewhere about certain reeds not being the best match for s mouthpiece with too open an opening or something like that-I forget the proper terminology. But some MPs are more open than others and this openness works against certain reed strengths or something like that. Anyway my MP is a Yamaha 4C which was recommended by a pro player and the ligature a BG  and is a vast improvement over the generic one that came with it. Anyway is there somewhere that shows a correlation between reed strengths and this opening.?

All about Clarinets / Good book for Beginners?
« on: November 21, 2017, 06:34:35 AM »
It's my birthday soon and my partner said if I could find a good beginners book online she will get it for me. It's a bit of a minefield out there and although I can play a tune on my clarinet I don't really know what notes I'm playing.
Would Clarinet for Dummies be any good?
