All about Clarinets / Playing in the second octave
« on: January 07, 2021, 03:13:14 PM »
So I thought I'd have a go at playing with the register key pressed. I soon discovered that the high notes need a bit more work and beyond a certain point I get no sound. Stronger reed for the higher notes?
I was using a very tight embouchure here with a Legere 2.5 reed.

All about Clarinets / Tuning test with 2 barrels
« on: December 27, 2020, 08:24:21 AM »
So after listening to Windy's advice I decided to check the tuning of my clarinet barrels, first the 65mn and then the 62mm.
I was thinking that my top A sounds flat but not so in this test, although it seems more in tune when using the 62mm barrel. Clarinet being what it is though I don't always sound the same.
I'm using a free Android tuner called Soundcorset. It allows the player to compensate for transposing instruments.
Edit: the site isn't letting me upload files so I'm using a third party hoster.

All about Clarinets / Is there a trick to playing quietly ?
« on: December 14, 2020, 12:12:48 PM »
I can play at a low volume but I then get a lot of air in the tone. Is it just a matter of getting a really tight embouchure, and does that come with time?

Or is it just me? I tried to change mine and got an error saying the file area is not writable, or something like that.  I also noticed everyone else's avatars aren't showing...

An old African American spiritual that I originally learned on recorder ages ago. I know it by heart so I thought I'd play it on the licorice stick. Good to play slow stuff, good practice.

All about Clarinets / Free sheet music?
« on: November 13, 2020, 03:23:21 PM »
Anyone know where I can get free sheet music? How long is it before a piece becomes public domain?
I want to play Misty by Erroll Garner but I play by ear. So far I can play the main theme by listening to YouTube videos but I haven't got round to the second phrase yet. Having it on sheet would make sure I'm playing the right notes.

A piece from the James Rae book. The tempo is marked Jazz Waltz Tempo, whatever that is...
My high A is weak. Probably weak embouchure because I don't play enough.

All about Clarinets / Undercover by James Rae
« on: September 27, 2020, 12:42:33 PM »
A piece called Undercover from a book by James Rae. Someone posted the score for me on Facebook. I learned 2 new notes, F# and Eb. Previously I was playing F sharp by using the ring only on the F key at the back. But this way is simpler, just the first fingerhole, no thumb. I ordered the book, should be with me soon.

First draft of it as it were so its a bit rough.
