All about Clarinets / Is there a trick to playing quietly ?
« on: December 14, 2020, 12:12:48 PM »
I can play at a low volume but I then get a lot of air in the tone. Is it just a matter of getting a really tight embouchure, and does that come with time?

Or is it just me? I tried to change mine and got an error saying the file area is not writable, or something like that.  I also noticed everyone else's avatars aren't showing...

All about Clarinets / Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen

An old African American spiritual that I originally learned on recorder ages ago. I know it by heart so I thought I'd play it on the licorice stick. Good to play slow stuff, good practice.

All about Clarinets / Free sheet music?
« on: November 13, 2020, 03:23:21 PM »
Anyone know where I can get free sheet music? How long is it before a piece becomes public domain?
I want to play Misty by Erroll Garner but I play by ear. So far I can play the main theme by listening to YouTube videos but I haven't got round to the second phrase yet. Having it on sheet would make sure I'm playing the right notes.

A piece from the James Rae book. The tempo is marked Jazz Waltz Tempo, whatever that is...
My high A is weak. Probably weak embouchure because I don't play enough.

All about Clarinets / Undercover by James Rae
« on: September 27, 2020, 12:42:33 PM »
A piece called Undercover from a book by James Rae. Someone posted the score for me on Facebook. I learned 2 new notes, F# and Eb. Previously I was playing F sharp by using the ring only on the F key at the back. But this way is simpler, just the first fingerhole, no thumb. I ordered the book, should be with me soon.

First draft of it as it were so its a bit rough.

All about Clarinets / Never on a Sunday
« on: August 25, 2020, 02:18:17 PM »
Never on a Sunday, a song I've come to love after first playing it on recorder. The dynamics of clarinet lend it that extra oomph.
Here's some facts about the song from Wikipedia
"Never on Sunday", also known by its original Greek title "Ta Pediá tou Pireá" ("The Children of Piraeus"), is a popular song written by Manos Hatzidakis and first sung by Melina Mercouri in the 1960 film of the same name.

All about Clarinets / Recorder/clarinet
« on: August 06, 2020, 08:55:14 AM »
A little piece called Dance Hither, in my alto recorder method book, first on alto recorder, and then on clarinet, which I haven't played in months!
I had to play the recorder part first, because if I go from clarinet (high pressure) to recorder (very low pressure) I find myself badly overblowing.

All about Clarinets / Tetris anyone?

Anyone used to play the old computer game? Remember the music to it, from a Russian composer (Khachaturian?)

Here's my version.
