All about Clarinets / A bit soon?
« on: November 29, 2017, 07:15:13 AM »
But well, practice is practice!
By the way I checked tuning against my ukulele, the C string corresponds with the C key on the clarinet.
I then tried switching to the slightly longer barrel-no difference!

All about Clarinets / A query about reeds
« on: November 24, 2017, 03:11:36 AM »
Ok so this is a query about reeds. I just found this video and it got me thinking.
I have a pack of 3 Rico Royal 2s and I'm still just using the first one I opened. I never thought of trying others in the pack, a reed is a reed. And this reed seems to last forever! No mold, no splits. How long are they supposed to last?

All about Clarinets / Sore thumb
« on: November 22, 2017, 12:03:09 PM »
The only trouble with clarinet is it kills my thumb! Not necessarily on the top, the rubber thumb protector helps there, it's more where the thumb holds the body of the instrument. Not sure if it's the angle I'm holding my thumb or just pressure on the body. Might have to try a sponge on the body itself

All about Clarinets / Reeds and mouthpieces
« on: November 22, 2017, 03:18:38 AM »
I have a good MP for my plastic clarinet and decent reeds (Rico Royals, 2.5) but I still squeak an awful lot. A  lot is possibly due to my untrained embouchure but I read somewhere about certain reeds not being the best match for s mouthpiece with too open an opening or something like that-I forget the proper terminology. But some MPs are more open than others and this openness works against certain reed strengths or something like that. Anyway my MP is a Yamaha 4C which was recommended by a pro player and the ligature a BG  and is a vast improvement over the generic one that came with it. Anyway is there somewhere that shows a correlation between reed strengths and this opening.?

All about Clarinets / Good book for Beginners?
« on: November 21, 2017, 06:34:35 AM »
It's my birthday soon and my partner said if I could find a good beginners book online she will get it for me. It's a bit of a minefield out there and although I can play a tune on my clarinet I don't really know what notes I'm playing.
Would Clarinet for Dummies be any good?

All about Clarinets / Where does the key come from?
« on: August 28, 2017, 07:20:28 AM »
Just something that was puzzling me. A Bb clarinet has the note Bb somewhere along its length, not at the the top or bottom hole, so why is it a Bb?

All about Clarinets / BG Reed performers?

Anyone use these? I don't get how they're supposed to work, or are they just a case of snake oil?

All about Clarinets / Never on a Sunday
« on: August 21, 2017, 02:50:18 AM »
I first learned this on ukulele (roughly) then played it on alto recorder. And here it is on clarinet. Even though it's now Monday here...
I believe this song was originally played on trumpet?

All about Clarinets / Clarinet mutes?
« on: August 18, 2017, 03:40:05 PM »
I've seen these on Google, they come in two parts, one for the barrel/UJ and one in the bell. Anyone use them? Do they affect the intonation at all?

All about Clarinets / Got myself a strap, sort of
« on: August 13, 2017, 01:22:48 PM »
We took a trip to see some old buses at a railway museum, and in the gift shop I spotted these railways themed  lanyards that they were selling and I thought, hmmm I wonder...
And later I had a crack at a classic by Acker Bilk.

All about Clarinets / Mouthpiece cleaning
« on: August 12, 2017, 01:34:01 PM »
After playing I pull my swab through the clarinet having first removed the mpc and barrel. It's a tight fit due to the tube-like hole where the register key is which extends some way into the inside of the UJ (is that normal?)
Anyway I then remove the reed and lig and then  pull it through my mpc. That's really tight and I was wondering if I risk damaging the mpc even tho it's a modern hard plastic one.
Also is it ok to just run it under the tap to rinse out?

All about Clarinets / Remembering Beiderbecke
« on: August 11, 2017, 05:18:29 AM »
It's funny but a pic of a Cornet was posted on here yesterday and while practising this morning the theme tune to a TV show based on the great man popped into my head (I also have a Beiderbecke collection on CD)
I think I'm getting the hang of this thing...

All about Clarinets / Antique clarinet in piece of art work?
« on: August 10, 2017, 05:05:08 AM »
Not sure if this is relevant but  I came across this figurine at Bowes Museum yesterday, and it appears to show a clarinet player, but judging by the short length of the instrument, and the date (1750s) I'm guessing it's a chalumeau. Its carved from a piece of pine and I  thought people might be interested to see it.
