All about Clarinets / Antique clarinet in piece of art work?
« on: August 10, 2017, 05:05:08 AM »
Not sure if this is relevant but  I came across this figurine at Bowes Museum yesterday, and it appears to show a clarinet player, but judging by the short length of the instrument, and the date (1750s) I'm guessing it's a chalumeau. Its carved from a piece of pine and I  thought people might be interested to see it.

All about Clarinets / I do believe it's a clarinet!

Wow I'm super happy right now. After practice my long notes I did a bit of jazzy improv, and bar the odd squeak I feel like I'm getting somewhere! I hope I'm not posting too many newbie posts but I'm quite pleased with myself!
Daft thing is I don't even know what notes I'm playing, I just went for it-thats improv!

I need to do this daily...I did get some really nasty squeaks going on, which made the kids laugh...
At least I put the ligature on the right way this time...

I finally got a decent mouthpiece (Yamaha 4C) and ligature(BG) and had a little play. I have to shut myself away and close the door cos it's loud and I sound like a dying cow. Doesn't help that I had the ligature on upside down. I wasn't aware there was a right way, and no booklet with it!

All about Clarinets / List of jazz clarinet players

I like some jazz, mainly the older stuff (not a fan of modern jazz really) but I am interested in jazz clarinet players, and I found this site.
Ignore the odd title, that threw me a little!

All about Clarinets / Couple of questions about clarinet

Ok I have a couple of newbie Q's.
First off is there a webpage showing a map of all the keys, what they're called and what they do?
Also mine came with a small screwdriver, what is it for adjusting?
What are throat tones? And I have two barrels, one shorter than the other. I understand they're for tuning but which should I use?

All about Clarinets / New member saying Hi
« on: July 24, 2017, 01:29:40 PM »
Hi everyone, my name is Larry and I got my first clarinet the other day, a Bb Windsor. I've not heard of Windsor and it's a budget level instrument. When it came I was full of cold with sinus pain and so I was unable to play it. However things are better today and after a bit of jiggery pokery with the dodgy ligature I got it to sound, and even got to play a scale!
I've wanted a clarinet for ages , having played recorder for over a year. I just love the sound of the instrument. It does need a better mouthpiece though I think, but it's a good starter!
