All about Clarinets / Re: Mystery Clarinet. Debeney La Monte.

Thanks for the response. I was not aware that stencils existed but it makes perfect sense. I mainly collect watches and vintage speakers and that was done for both. I read some of the posts on stencils and tomorrow I will take a much closer look at the keys to see if I can find any markings.

Pretty cool. Can't say I've heard of this one, could be one of a rather unlimited number of different brand names stenciled on French clarinets.

I'm not as good with my key ID as I used to be, but Thibouville and Malerne were two of the biggest stencil makers.

Found a $10 clarinet at a thrift store. It looked interesting so I just grabbed it. Got it home and couldn’t find anything about it on Google. So I’m posting here to see if anyone has any info.

It is a Debeney. Serial number 160. It has a script “La Monte” at an angle on the upper joint.

Take a look at the pictures for details.

Thanks for looking.

babbit may have made the blanks but the facing work was done by chas bay

he is 79 and dosnt seem to want to work anymore. the quality of his work has taken a turn for the worse lately also. sadly he is the only game in town. i spent 4 hrs today working on the marlane myself and have it playing. it still needs some work resetting some key heights to eliminate stuffy notes that arnt getting enough venting due to too close height in the key action. while this isnt the best alto i have played its not that bad and deserves to be put back in action.

I faced one of them, (I had a box of 10, originally) after taking a short, 4 hour class at The University of North Carolina by a noted re-facer.
I figured I had little to lose.
It plays.  It does not play very well, (because I really still do not know what I am doing, but am decent with symmetry), and, of course, "playable" and "enjoyable" are two entirely different animals.
Interestingly, these were reportedly made by Babbitt for Bay.

I don't see why any tech would REFUSE to touch something unless they physically can't perform some aspect of the repair. if its just padwork, then it's just like any other day in the office.

Could be your location is driving prices up.

A quick look on eBay US shows this guy selling for $1,150.

Sure, it's from 1960, so that may be too old.

Here's one from just 2010 for $2k US.

If you're looking for a new one, they tend to top out around $3,800 US.

Thanks Dave
Really appreciate the response. I priced out a new R13 at a local music shop for $5000 Canadian. About $4000 US. I have been looking for used R13s and found one on Kijiji for $2700 Canadian so I was hoping for some comments to help me make a decision. Any additional comments would be appreciated.
