Evette Schaeffer B-Series Information
« on: January 25, 2017, 07:03:29 AM »
Picked up a decent Evette Schaffer B-Series (SN-B546) on a whim yesterday on the cheap.  Nice looking horn with no cracks in the wood and appears to have been relatively well cared for, just been sitting for a LONG time.  I have been doing a lot of searching on these over the last couple of weeks and really striking out on any solid information about these clarinets.  From what I have gathered they were more than likely made by Malerne in the 1940's - Early 50's, and I see nothing so far to say that mine was not made by Malerne from the pictures that I have of it, meaning I find nothing to say it was definitively built by Buffet.   Just curious if anyone out there has any experience with these B-Series clarinets, not so much looking for speculation on their building, but more interested in opinions on how they play, intonation, etc.

Thanks,
Steve

IF ANYONE HAS MORE INFORMATION THAN WHAT IS SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE WEB I WOULD BE INTERSTED IN FINDING OUT MORE ABOUT IT'S PRODUCTION!

Dear Steve,
There used to be a website called Clarinetperfection.com but it is no longer online.  However, there is something called the Internet Archive wayback machine, which is archive.org/web
This archive takes "snapshots" of websites and saves them.
Basically,  you can put in the web address for a defunct website, and if you're lucky, it was preserved at this archive.  You are shown a timeline, and logic tells me to pick the saved view that is the newest, which was  October 2016, though the most current view of the E & S section was from April.
I've provided a link to the Evette Schaefer info page from that website.  Unfortunately, most of the images were not preserved, but there are descriptions and serial number lists that you may find helpful.  You're probably going to have to enlarge it to read it, it's pretty small on my ipad.

This is the link to the homepage archive of clarinet perfection

This is a link to the Evette Schaefer info page, which you can also get to by clicking at the top of the main page under serial numbers.  There is a little info about the B series, though not about playing/intonation as you are more interested in, but the production, as you said you'd also like to know about, so here it is.  I'm not sure this is totally accurate, or if it's this person's opinion.

The guy who used to run ClarinetPerfection is named Steve Sklar; here's his email: stevesklar@gmail.com.

Hopefully he's still around.

Lisa,
Yeah--total bummer about Clarinetperfection going down.  I used to visit it frequently.
I had never heard of the Internet Archive:  Wayback Machine website.
Thanks for that!

Lisa,

Thanks for the link!  Pretty much reinforced the rest of the data that I had gathered.  It was nice having access to the list of SN's they had listed for the B-Series with variations noted.

Thanks again,
Steve

I'm glad the information was a little useful.
I've used the wayback machine archive lots of times, to hunt down stuff that had disappeared.  Its not always there, but it can come through once in a while!
