Stencil Clarinet
« on: July 10, 2020, 05:08:03 PM »
Good night.

My name is Carlos, I live in São Paulo Brazil, and I recently bought a clarinet (ebony or grenadilla) and it came with just a serial number and writing made in France, I spent all day trying to find out who the clarinet maker was and I couldn't.

Can you help me with this research?

The clarinet's serial number is: S 2382 and on the upper back is written in France

you can also tell me if it's a good clarinet, I played and found the sound pleasant, I'm a student.

Malerne was a pretty popular maker of stencil clarinets. Can you post some pics please?

Looking at the font of the "Made in France" stamp, I believe this is made by Malerne, anytime between 1950 and 1960.

It appears to have all leather pads, which is sort of unusual. This either means it is older than 1950, or is of a relatively high quality.

In any case, it looks pretty nice! It might even play as-is.

Agreed!  That's definitely Malerne keywork.  It has all the telltale signs!

Although resale won't be high, some of their instruments were terrific.  It's worth seeing if you can get it to play.
