Floor Peg Attachment For Alto Clarinet
« on: March 04, 2021, 09:13:47 PM »
Just felt like sharing a little project that I just finished recently (I think, there could still be some room for improvements in the future).

So a little background, I play the alto clarinet, but one thing that I realized while playing was how awkward it is to support it. Mine (and most that I've seen, except for a few modern pro models) only have the option for a neck strap and no floor peg, like the bass clarinet. I tried this with some that I had and found none of them worked very well and eventually just played it using the thumbrest, which works but starts to feel heavy for a while. My solution was to design my own attachment mechanism, so I could use a floor peg.

It's a fairly simple design and is easily attached to the instrument using a single screw and a velcro strap and doesn't require any permanent modification to the instrument.
I spend way too much time looking at instruments I probably shouldn't be buying.

Nice,  It's good to see practical uses of 3d printing.

Amazing. You could probably sell that!

Looks good. I quite fancy an alto. Bit rich for me though
You don't stop playing when you get old, you get old when you stop playing.

You can get them for pretty cheap sometimes. I bought my rare Kohlert metal alto for like $100.

More realistically, a plastic alto (Bundy or Vito) can be had for around $300.

That is very impressive.  I agree with David that you could almost certainly sell those.

Rather than sell them, you could publish the stl on say, thingiverse and let others benefit for free.

Thanks everyone! I’m glad others really seem to like this project of mine.

I’ve considered trying to sell these once I finalized the design. From looking around, it seems like there’s a decent amount of people who would be interested, and I’d like a little compensation for the time and money I’ve invested in designing this. Although, I’d try to keep the pricing fair and not charge extravagant amounts for it like I’ve seen a lot of people do with 3D printing (often with files that aren’t even originally theirs).
I spend way too much time looking at instruments I probably shouldn't be buying.

Although it would be noble to provide the files to the public for free, if you invent something revolutionary you should be compensated, in my opinion. Stands are expensive, and people would FLOCK to your store if you sold these are a reasonable price.
