1917 Buffet Crampon Boehm A LP
« on: January 22, 2022, 12:58:04 PM »
Just picked this up at auction for about $70.  Barrel and mpc. not original.  Banded on LJ ( doesn't bother me, I like this banding actually!).  Top joint has been pinned due to a crack to the register tube, I think the drill holes were filled with lacquer, which has turned brittle and is falling out.  Easy enough to fill with super glue and wood dust, or maybe black epoxy.  Overall, if the crack repair is stable (looks like fine job, really, no reason to doubt it), this should be very nice, the condition is not too shabby given the age.

What a neat find, Mod--and a tremendous price, at that.  She looks solid to me.  Glad you saved her.
You'll hopefully pardon the builder/home inspector in me for noticing your base trim and hinges in the background.  You love the old things, indeed, as those appear to be 1920s-1930s details, or clever reproductions.

The house is old, built around 1890 I think, no remaining records about its origin, but it was around for a couple of years by 1892-3 according to my neighbors' research years ago.  It's lived a hard life, so it's difficult to know what's original.  As I understand, the houses like mine on this block were where many of the workers lived that built the huge, luxurious Victorian mansions in town.  It's all a historic district now.  Anyway, I do indeed have a keen interest in history and old stuff!  Hence, all the old clarinets (with a focus on the mid 19th-through mid 20th century Boehm system).  I do like new stuff, too- my training is as an industrial designer and I also love modernism! :o

All neat!

I love balloon-framed houses.  They hold up quite a bit better than poor George Washington Snow's reputation in the early days would have one believe.  He had tremendous vision.  I inspect them frequently, and had one today from 1918.  It was a gem.

This one will be a player more than a looker. Maybe I'll send it on to my father if I can get it set up well and it plays decently, he sometimes has want of an A, but is too frugal to buy himself one.  I probably should have learned that lesson from him besides all the other things I learned from him, but nope...
