need replacement lower joint for VSP
« on: May 20, 2022, 01:54:50 PM »
Hi friends, hope all is well. I wanted to ask about finding the best possible replacement lower joint for a Leblanc VSP (all wood 7820 model, s/n D54xxx and has the thinner "swoop" style C#/G# key, and the throat A key is more centered on the hinge tube, not offset like other VSP's I've seen; also the logos are engraved deeper into the wood than a newer VSP that I've seen). I've lost the lower joint (long story) and would like to replace it as best I can. The upper joint measures about 15mm up top and around 14.8mm lower end. I've tried a few already that fit, but didn't play/sound/respond right: Leblanc Esprit, Leblanc LL's (vintage 1966 and 1983), and (surprisingly) a friend's newer VSP.  Any suggestions? Thanks, JC.

I feel like you'd be better off just getting an entirely new clarinet. The odds of getting a perfect match on a Frankenstein'd clarinet is pretty minimal.

Not impossible, but you'd basically find yourself trying every joint you come across until you magically find one that fits just right. I don't know if there's any real advice I can give, other than just keep trying.

Hey, JC, glad you came here to ask the question!

My suggestion: Try a newer or 1980s plastic Vito joint. You might be surprised!

I've tried another lower joint that did not work - Noblet 27 from 1973 - my VSP upper joint would only go in about two thirds of the way. Phil, you're thinking a Vito, how about a V40 from 1991, that's about the same year my VSP was made.  Thanks to everyone for the advice; I may end up just getting another VSP and using the orphaned upper joint for spare parts.
