Wonky reed stops play
« on: November 10, 2023, 01:52:37 PM »
So I haven't played in a while, and I picked it up and could hardly get a note out. Couldn't work out what was going on, till I had a look at the reed( Legere european cut 2.5) and noticed the tip wasnt flat. Instead of being like — it was more like ~
So I switched to a Rico cane and bingo, tone is back!
I wonder if I can get the tip flat again...cant afford another Legere, plus it was a real chore to get that one! Luckily I have a few cane reeds.

Larry,
Sadly, you probably cannot, but you can press it for a week or so, and try.  Give it a go!

Yes, I doubt you can "get the warps out" as I always refer to it. With my wood reeds, I wet them and carefully put the tip on the mouthpiece facing perpendicular to the mouthpiece. Then very carefully with my index finger "tick" the bottom of the reed. Always removes the warps, but that's with a wooden reed. May be worth a shot with the Legere?

That old flick trick won't work with Legere unfortunately. Must have been stored bent. Heat might work. Submerse in boiling water for 15 seconds or so, then pop into a reed guard to cool flat. This will temporarily make the reed softer, but it will go back to normal strength in a few days. Alternatively, if the reed is less than 6 months old and you have your receipt, you can do a free exchange through the Legere website.

Personally, I've never cared much for Legere on clarinet or sax, except on low voices like bari and bass. Even then, the high register is buzzy and unstable. Cane is still king for me.

Well would you believe it. I've mislaid the ruddy thing! Can not remember where I put it lol
Luckily I've got a few Rico cane reeds!
