What do you think the purpose of the wire is on the lower joint? (1st pic)  It's not replacing a spring. (2nd pic)

A great question.  Nicely twisted, using a post as a fulcrum, and what appears to be a deliberate catch on the rod key.  I take it for an assist return mechanism, since the key is double articulated.  It appears that it routes to the articulated key, and is anchored by a small screw atop it.  It cannot be an alternate key actuator, as it is tied to a post, and snaked around others.
