Barrel sound comparison, wood, HR, plastic
« on: August 10, 2013, 10:01:00 AM »
This is a follow-up from my post entitled New barrel maker from China: Kaiyu. http://clarinetpages.info/showthread.php?tid=281

In this post, I use the same Noblet D clarinet, the same Chedeville Prime mouthpiece, and the same Legere Signature 3 3/4 reed, and only change the barrels. I also used a better recording set up directly into Audacity, using a Rolland Eiderol external box and better microphone.

I didn\'t bother to edit these files, so please forgive the mistakes. You will probably be able to tell when my attention was flagging, and I probably play worse as time goes on. On the clarinetpages.net site, I tell the story of how Joe Allard amazed me by being able to tell without looking if I was playing a wooden Buffet barrel or my Springer plastic barrel. He stood in a corner with his hands cupped behind his ears, and in only a second or two he could tell— even when I tried to fool him by playing the same combination twice or switching to a buzzier reed. So, in honor of Joe, I include the Springer barrel in this line-up.

The files below are in the reverse order, bottom to top, that I made the recordings.
