Ridenour thumb saddle is similar, and excellent. It's a mildly flexible rubber.

My clarinet has a rubber cover over the metal thumb rest and so far my thumb is ok, but I only started playing today for about half hour. Would a neck strap ease things?

Yes to the neck strap. And if you try a squishy thumb cushion, you will like it.

Any feelings on how this compares to the Ridenour thumb saddle? (They work for me!)

You ever see those squishy pencil grippers all the elementary school kids have? They fit perfectly onto a thumb rest. If you don't want or need the extra spacing and hand position alteration that comes from a real thumb saddle, they are an excellent alternative.

It's that extra distance that opens up the hand that is so relaxing. A padded support is a good start, but for those with large hands, keeping the thumb up tight like that induces stress. As was mentioned in another thread, the key companion to the thumb pad is the cushioned neck strap. Put those together and everything gets easier.

There are some unused bag straps knocking about the place, I'm sure I can rejig one to use as a neck strap.

By daughter uses a Ron Koolman Etude 3 thumb rest. They are sometimes hard to find and bit  expensive.

Now that I have been using the Kenny thumb saddle for 6 weeks, I must say I LOVE it! And returning to the Ridenour saddle on another instrument, is disappointing. The Kenny grips better and accommodates my thumb better. The material and design are superior, in my opinion. I'm glad I got more than one.

Thanks to The Clarinet Pages!

Still love the thumb rest, softer and more comfortable than the the Ridenour. But had to lop off a corner to use with my Lyrique 576 as it interfered with the B/F# pad opening and closing. once I did that, works beautifully.
Playing a clarinet badly is better than not playing a clarinet at all.

Looks good. But how does one attach a strap?
