I would say get yourself a Beginner level book, such as Standard of Excellence. They are made for younger kids in school band for the most part, but that's good - it really focuses on the basics and builds on that foundation

Quote from: ozebob on September 21, 2025, 05:29:14 AMI recently watched Utube where clarinet from china had 2 barrells of different lengths, I guess it is 2 keys
That is for fine tuning
Specifically, sometimes you need to push in or pull out a little too much (for whatever reason), so instead of exposing 1/2" of cork, you can just use a different sized barrel

All about Clarinets / Re: Market Rebound?

I stopped selling clarinets a number of years ago because the amount of time I sunk was never worth the final sale price. I was making like $10-15 an hour, which became a pointless endeavor.

50 random clarinets stuffed in a closet later, maybe now's the time to get back into it

I haven't used them in quite a number of years. Even back 10 years ago they would indeed take FOREVER, up to and over a month. I can only imagine that things have slowed even further these days.

Larry, very sorry to hear that! We'll all be sure to play for you. I'm glad you'll be able to pass the joy of playing to the younger generation.

Stay strong, friend.

"I get super hot when playing clarinet..."

Had a girlfriend in high school who said the same thing.

Quote from: brigaltman on June 06, 2025, 09:59:55 PMyears ago I had a mouthpiece for an oboe. It fit on a normal oboe tube, used a single reed (which I never tried). You could have reeds for such an animal.

Just what I would going to say, even the Ab clarinet reed isn't as small as a mouthpiece'd oboe. I've heard some videos of the oboe mouthpiece and it tends to be rather stuffy, and even in the hands of a pro it doesn't sound as good as a double reed.

Back in middle school, during band, I would loudly exclaim something to the effect of "oh boy, here I go putting an alto sax reed on a bass clarinet again!" and the band director would get really mad every time. It was oddly petty but I did it all the time to push the poor man's buttons.

Sheesh, you just have a Silver King laying around? In general these are without a doubt the best metal clarinets ever produced.

I suspect a peach is either a very faded red (excessive sun exposure?) or a very discolored white/ivory (also excessive sun exposure).

I had a white Dazzler (original color showed inside the bore) that looked very dark yellow, sort of like a manila envelope. That's the closest thing to "peach" I've ever seen.

when did the spring-in-hole technique die out, and why? I don't think I've seen any post the 1930s at the very latest. I found them annoying because I kept on poking myself on them during reassembly. At one point I think the clarinet I was working on had more blood than oil on it...

I suspect it's easier to adjust spring tension when you don't have to take the entire key off, but then again it's also easier to lose spring tension when its just a notch.

I'm somewhat surprised it's LP considering the lack of rollers. I would think that points to an earlier date of somewhere in the 1890-1900 range?

I had a Henri/y (something) High pitch C that I sold some years ago for like $120 or something stupid low, but since this is low pitch I feel it is in a much better position to be valued at somewhere around $500

I have definitely seen those unique key touches as well, but heck if I can remember what/where I saw it before.

Trading Post / Re: Penzel Mueller Alto Clarinet

Although an excellent instrument, open hole altos with no low Eb are not very popular. I would think this is somewhere in the $1,000 range if you can find a buyer, that is. More realistically I'd wager somewhere in the $750 range is fair

Still probably not a bad price, if it stays under $400. If nothing else for the curiosity factor
